African Americans And The American Dream

MetLife - Dwight Raiford photo 06-11-09As the current economic crisis has led Americans to re-evaluate their priorities, the American dream is, once again, being revised.  For many, it is now defined first and foremost by financial security, followed by a greater emphasis on personal relationships – family, marriage and children.

According to The 2009 MetLife Study of the American Dream–the company’s third annual study–eight in 10 or 82 percent of African Americans believe they will be able to achieve the American dream in their lifetimes, compared to 89 percent of Hispanics and 75 percent of the overall population.  While African Americans are more optimistic it is still possible to achieve the American dream, they lag other groups in their achievement of the dream, with only 19 percent of African Americans reporting that they have achieved the dream.

New Harlem Honored MetLife Director

MetLife, Inc. recently announced the appointment of Mack Rice to the newly created position of Agency Multicultural Director.  In his role, Mack will be dedicated to the recruitment, career development and retention of African American and other diverse financial service representatives for the company. Mack also will continue strengthening the company’s ties to multicultural communities in New York and New Jersey.   
 
Mack is a risk management and financial services professional with extensive experience in sales and marketing.  Before joining MetLife, Mack served as President and CEO of the Northstar Consulting Group LLC, a personal risk and wealth management firm established in 2005, and as a financial representative for Guardian Life Insurance Company. He also worked for 19 years with global professional services firm Marsh & McLennan, where he held significant advisory, transactional, talent development and strategic leadership responsibilities.
