Willie Mays All Star StickBall In Harlem

Willie Mays took the megaphone, brought it to his face and admitted that after a long flight from San Francisco the day before, “I’m tired, man.” But he still made it to a schoolyard in Harlem on Sunday morning to watch the 2008 All-Star Youth Stickball Tournament between children from Harlem RBI, a youth development program, the New York Emperors Stickball League and the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.

“I went to bed at about one and woke up at about three,” Mays said. “I couldn’t sleep, because I knew that if I overslept, the kids that are here would be disappointed.”

They weren’t. The event featured one game, which was a 9-9 tie, but the emphasis was on learning the basics and having fun. Continue reading
