Saturday August 29, was the last day of the 3-day J&R MusicFest 2009. J&R Music World, the driving force behind the MusicFest, once again put together a diverse group of artists to perform for the public at City Hall Park for free. KRS-One and Buckshot, LeToya Luckett, Nikki Yanofsky, Roberta Gambarini and Roy Hargrove all performed for the last day of the MusicFest
Though the rain was still coming down, the decision was made to have the show outside. Shortly after the scheduled start time, the rain stopped and DJ Evil Dee of the Beatminerz jumped on stage to get the beats ready for the KRS-One and Buckshot performance. With a joint CD – Survival Skills- slated to be released September 15, these two Hip Hop artists freestyled as well as performed songs from their separate catalogs and joint project.
LeToya performed songs from her new CD Lady Love, at times speaking directly to the women in the audience about relationship issues which were the inspiration for some of the songs on the CD.
After the first two performances, J&R Music World was packed with people on lines waiting to get autographs from KRS-One, Buckshot and LeToya. For those who were on line and missed Nikki Yanofsky perform-really missed a treat!
The 15 year old Jazz singing phenom from Canada put on a great show. Nikki’s big voice, singing ability and stage presence left people in awe. Checking out Nikki do her thing was superstar Recording Artist Wyclef Jean. Showing his support for this young talent, Wyclef didn’t leave the park until after spending some time backstage taking pictures and doing interviews talking up this rising star.
Roberta Gambarini, who has performed with great Jazz artists such as Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride, and Toots Thielemans, kept the Jazz vibe going. Closing out the J&R MusicFest 2009, Jazz Trumpeter, Composer and Bandleader Roy Hargrove led a huge band. On a tight stage, maneuvering around other musicians to complete solos appeared to be a bit of a challenge, but they made it happen and the music was fantastic!
