Glenn Ligon’s Porn, Politics, And Pop At The Whitney Museum
Glenn Ligon had his first solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1993, the same year he appeared in the museum’s much maligned biennial. At the time, politically provocative art dominated the cultural landscape, and as the conceptual artist channeled African-American cultural history through text-based pieces that declared things like “I feel most colored when I am thrown against a sharp white background,” Ligon found himself stereotyped as an artist propagandizing about racial identity. Rangel Is Frayed but Defiant
On the House floor during a debate over health care reform, he taunted a colleague who had been calling for his ouster. At a recent fund-raiser, he complained that the House speaker had made an end run around him and his committee. Confronted by a persistent conservative activist in a hallway, he let loose an expletive, telling the man to mind his own business.
Sowell, From Harlem With Love
Politics
Letters from parents often complain of a sense of futility in trying to argue with their own children, who have been fed a steady diet of the politically correct vision of the world, from elementary school to the university.
Some ask for suggestions of particular books that might make a dent in the know-it-all attitude of some young people who have heard only one side of the story in classrooms all their lives.
That is one way of going about trying to de-program young people. There are, for example, some good books showing what is wrong with the “global warming” crusades or showing why male-female differences in income or occupations are not automatically discrimination.
Not The Wright Kennedy?
Politics
From the NYTimes.com by NICHOLAS CONFESSORE and DANNY HAKIM
…In the weeks that followed, Ms. Kennedy, along with several members of Congress and leading political officials, began lobbying the governor for the coveted Senate seat. She attracted relentless attention and was viewed by many as the most likely choice for Mr. Paterson, given her national stature and ties to the incoming Obama administration.
“I’m surprised, I’m very surprised,” said Assemblyman Keith L. T. Wright, a friend of the governor’s who met with Ms. Kennedy in his Harlem office. He added: “I had just met with her last week and she told me she was in and ready, willing and able.”…
NYO’s Term-Limits Channel
The Politicker
And I thought we were obsessed with term limits. NY1 is keeping a useful tally of how each of the 51 Council members plans to vote on the bill to extend term limits. At the moment, the Web site lists 14 “yes” votes, 17 “no” votes, and 20 undecided. NY1 also plans on airing live coverage of the two hearings that will take place on October 16 and 17 at City Hall. And most fun of all: Reporter Roger Clark has begun visiting the districts of each undecided Council member to talk to constituents.
