Salters Scene:Apollo Theater Celebrates 75 Years

In celebration of the 75th year, the Apollo held a gala benefit tribute concert and awards ceremony mondy night.  Music man Quincy Jones and the diva Patti LaBelle were inducted into the Apollo Legends Hall of Fame.  An honor definitely earned by these two entertainment giants.

Comedian, actor and champion of the community Bill Cosby and Camille Cosby were awarded the Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis Arts & Humanitarian Award.

This wonderful night would not be complete without beginning on the red carpet.  And there is nothing like the red carpet in Harlem in front of the Apollo on 125th street.

Harlem was out in full force to see the big names walk the carpet and they were not disappointed.  The crowd went crazy when the triple threat himself, Jamie Foxx stepped out of the limo.  “We love you Jaime” could be heard down the block.  Always a crowd pleaser, Jamie posed for various fan photos, before moving on to the press for interviews.  Other crowd favorites on red carpet were Patti LaBelle, Bill and Camille, Quincy Jones, Gayle King, the View’s Sherri Shepherd, Harlemite Dougie Fresh and of course Mariah Carey.

The Apollo Theater, one of the nation’s greatest cultural treasures, has announced plans for its 75th Anniversary Gala Concert and Awards Ceremony, to be held at the historic Theater on Monday, June 8, 2009. The Gala celebration will bring together the best and brightest in business and entertainment to raise funds in support of the non-profit theater’s 75-year legacy and its initiatives for emerging artists and community and educational programs in New York City and beyond. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with red carpet entrances, followed by the Gala concert and awards ceremony at 7:00 p.m. and ending with a grand after-party, the Apollo Supper Club.
