In 2004 America’s barrier breaking ballet company, Dance Theatre of Harlem was forced to suspend operations. This was a considerable loss to the dance world; for over thirty-five years the company had not only filled a void by hiring and training ballet dancers of color, but it debunked the widely held belief that dancers of African decent were physically ill equipped to dance ballet. On Wednesday, April 10 the Dance Theatre of Harlem was officially resurrected at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall, Time Warner Center. Continue reading

Walter’s World: Dance 2.0 Part 3

The third studio showing of works in progress for the Dance 2.0 Series was on many levels a nostalgic look into the future. Artistic Director Virginia Johnson charged choreographer Darrell Grand Moultrie with the task of creating a work that embodied the spirit of Arthur Mitchell’s pas de duex The Greatest. Mitchell’s ballet is an inspirational duet set to the music of George Benson; Moultrie was asked to create a contemporary ballet work to popular music.

Walter’s World: Harlem Dance Works 2.0 Part Two (update)

An overflow crowd attended the second studio showing of Dance Theatre of Harlem 2.0 on Thursday October 21. This week an excerpt from a work in progress by Robert Garland was presented. Mr. Garland’s duet was set to four of the Goldberg Variations by Johann Sebastian Bach.

Misty Copeland (Soloist American Ballet Theatre) and Matthew Prescott performed the yet untitled duet. Garland was asked by Dance Theatre of Harlem Artistic Director Virginia Johnson to create a work classical in design. Continue reading

Walter’s World: Dance 2.0 Dance Theatre of Harlem

The Dance Theatre of Harlem literally danced onto the arts scene in 1969. With just thirty students and one teacher, co-founder Karel Shock; Arthur Mitchell began what was to become his life’s mission. A Harlem native Mitchell recruited directly from his community and within two months the number of students had grown to over four hundred.
