14 Schools In Harlem Revitalized On New York Cares Day

New York Cares will send 7,000 volunteers across the city to revitalize public schools on New York Cares Day, Saturday, October 15, 2011.  Now in its 20th year, this citywide day of volunteering will revitalize 111 schools across the five boroughs. This year, volunteers will spruce up 23 schools in Manhattan (14 in Harlem) including P.S. 50 M-Vito Marcantonio in East Harlem where New Yorkers will touch-up the school’s main entrance, paint a large welcome mural and an early childhood mural, and re-paint the dance room. Beginning in the 1920s, Congressman Fiorello LaGuardia held election-eve rallies at this intersection of Lexington Avenue and 116th Street, on East Harlem’s “main street.” His rallies drew many thousands of New Yorkers who supported his efforts as congressman and mayor to improve the quality of life for working people and ethnic minorities, and to modernize the city’s government and infrastructure.
