The Raz: Tale of Two Shortstops

By Marc “The Raz” Rasbury

It is funny how fortunes can change in a (Harlem) New York minute. Two years ago, Derek Jeter was the King of New York while his Mets counter part, Jose Reyes, was being labeled an enigma. Jeter was leading the Yanks to their 27th World Series Championship whereas Reyes was nursing what was originally diagnosed as a hamstring strain that eventually turned into a year-long rehabilitation stint. Music

If you were caught up doing something important, were watching the Yankees take on the Dodgers or you, like many other people gave up on BET and decided not to watch the 2010 BET Awards, you missed something special. Chris Brown, superstar recording artist and amazing dancer, took the stage last night for a much awaited performance-tribute to the King of Pop who we all know died last year.  Chris was supposed to do this tribute last year, but was going through legal troubles with his then girlfriend Rihanna, who accused him of abusing her after a heated argument.  All that in the past, Chris Brown had everyone up on their feet, screaming out his name catch as many flicks of the amazing performance, many called “the most electrifying and moving performance they had ever seen“…   Continue reading

Harlem’s Bojangles Saves the Yankees’

Bill "Bojangles" RobinsonIn the summer of 1938, Jake Powell, a journeyman Yankees outfielder, talked his way into trouble. During a pregame radio interview at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Powell said he spent the off-season as a police officer in Dayton, Ohio. Then, using a racial slur, he said he stayed in shape by hitting blacks over the head with his nightstick.

Powell was never a police officer in Dayton, but that was beside the point. His remark set off an uproar, even at a time when the Yankees and other major league teams did not field black ballplayers.

The Yankees’ front office, including Manager Joe McCarthy, tried to make light of Powell’s comment. But realizing that Harlem’s blacks represented a good chunk of their game-day patrons, the Yankees sought to quell the public-relations nightmare by reaching out to Bill Robinson, the popular black dancer nicknamed Bojangles. Robinson was known as the honorary mayor of Harlem as well as the Yankees’ No. 1 fan. Continue reading

Torre ‘Rips’ Steinbrenner A New A-Rod

Books

torreOne would assume the final Sunday in January is the dullest day of the year when it comes to baseball news (not). Most years one would be right .

Yet there’s no way that’s the case today. As I type, the baseball blogosphere is ablaze over reports in the New York Post and Daily News that Joe Torre’s forthcoming book on his 12-season tenure with the Yankees is sure to be a much talked-about page turner once it’s released by Doubleday on Feb. 3.
