Ten-Year Sentence in Harlem Hoops Shootings

February 14, 2014

ruckerA man who shot into a crowd of spectators and wounded five at a storied New York City basketball tournament has been sentenced to a decade in prison.

Ricardo Laing was sentenced Thursday in a Manhattan court. He pleaded guilty last month to assault and weapons charges in the July 2012 shootings at the Entertainers Basketball Classic in Harlem’s Rucker Park.

Laing’s lawyer didn’t immediately return a call Thursday.

Rucker Park is revered by fans of pick-up basketball. Professional players often turn up at the tournament.

Prosecutors say the 25-year-old Laing pulled out a gun and began firing amid a dispute between supporters of rival teams. The victims survived.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office had sought a 12-year prison term. A judge decided on 10 years (source).
