The event was created by the Hip-Hop Pedagogy Group at The Institute for Urban and Minority Education (IUME) at Teachers College in Harlem.

  • Toni Blackman, Author of the Wisdom of the Cypher, rapper, actress, writer and U.S. State Department Ambassador
  • Abiodun Oyewole, Founding Member of the Last Poets, Harlemite, poet, author, musician, mentor, teacher
  • Joey Bada$$, Brooklyn Based, Independent Hip-Hop Artist
  • Walter Hildago, Author of Beyond the Four Walls, The Rising Ministry and Spirituality of Hip-Hop 
  • Dr. Josef Sorett, Assistant Professor of Religion and African-American Studies and Associate Director of the Institute for Religion, Culture, and Public Life
  • Sage Morgan-Hubbard, Multidisciplinary Artist, Poet, Activist, Co-Creator of Mixed Mamas Two Woman Show

This panel will showcase the research, theory and practice that honor the intersections between Hip-Hop, healing and spirituality. This interactive and creative panel will not only highlight the work of the world renown practitioners, scholars and activists, but also present initial findings of a scan of themes and understandings related to Hip-Hop and spirituality, as well as invite attendees to bring their own experience to the table through the framework of the Cypher.

This workshop, led by Toni Blackman and IUME Scholars will creatively explore not only where the work has come, but where it will go next. Participants will be led through a workshop exploring the history, meanings and functions of the Cypher as well as be called to name their individual understandings in collaboration with a greater, universal context.
