Touro In Harlem Students Land Outstanding Residencies For Fall

April 11, 2014

Claire JosephStudents graduating from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine (TouroCOM) in Harlem in June have completed an outstanding round of residency matches for fall, according to results from the school’s fourth consecutive “Match Day.” Out of the 131 students eligible for matches in the class of 2014, 98 percent were successfully matched – with many going to the most respected residency programs in the country.

“The class of 2014 has performed well throughout their training. These students continue to prove themselves by the successes shown in their matches to such fine institutions in New York, New Jersey and throughout the country,” said Dr. Robert B. Goldberg, dean and professor at TouroCOM. “Our graduates are well prepared to meet the needs of the medically underserved people of all backgrounds. We send them off with pride and confidence.”

TouroCOM is committed to training osteopathic physicians, with a particular emphasis on practicing medicine in underserved communities, and to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine. A cornerstone of the school’s mission is to graduate qualified osteopathic physicians into primary care residencies in specialties including family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology.

“TouroCOM graduates continue to distinguish themselves by placing into many of the most prestigious residency programs in New York and across the United States, in the most desirable specialties. It is noteworthy that 55 percent of this year’s graduates chose primary care, and 65 percent are staying in the New York metropolitan area, with a majority working in medically underserved communities,” said Dr. Kenneth J. Steier, dean and professor at the TouroCOM-Middletown Campus.

Of the students in the graduating class, 25 percent were matched to residencies in general internal medicine, 14 percent in pediatrics, 12 percent in family medicine, 9 percent in emergency medicine, 7 percent in psychiatry and 4 percent in OB/GYN.

Included among the area’s hospitals receiving TouroCOM graduates are Maimonides Medical Center, St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, Staten Island University Hospital, Palisades Medical Center, St. Barnabas Hospital, Westchester Medical Center and New York University Medical Center. In other parts of the country, the graduates will be residents at Georgetown University Hospital, University of Cincinnati Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, among others.

All of the TouroCOM students will become osteopathic physicians; however, they were eligible to apply for both allopathic (M.D.) and osteopathic (DO) residencies. The allopathic residency “matches” are made by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) and the osteopathic matches by the National Matching Services (NMS). NRMP residencies are open to students at both allopathic and osteopathic medical schools. The NMS residencies are open only to DO students. Selections are based predominantly on student performance while on rotations at hospitals, as well as their national board scores.

TouroCOM is dedicated to mentoring students as soon as they begin their medical education. The deans and faculty work closely with the students to ensure that they receive a rigorous, hands-on medical education, and offer many programs that allow students to interact directly with the community. This exposure ultimately guides students through the process of successfully landing residencies at top institutions.
