Trolley Car On Broadway And 122nd Street 1919

June 3, 2015

122nd street harlemHere is a snap shot of a south bound Trolley car and a man walking north on Broadway crossing 122nd Street in West Harlem in 1919.

The Trolley car coming south is about to passes a man walking up tp an empty Broadway dirt street with the inlaid trolley tracks. The photographer boldly stands in the middle of the street to take this photograph while being sandwiched by Columbia University on the left and a row of apartment units to the right. This is an interesting period in Harlem’s history when the trolley cars, automobiles and horse-drawn carriages were on the street at the same time and without traffic lights no wonder people were getting hit all the time.

In hindsight it makes sense that the #1 subway train runs in the center of Broadway – quite an amazing feat of construction and design.
