First Lady Michelle Obama welcomed winners of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge to the White House Kids’ State Dinner on July 14, 2016.

cc2Over 1,200 aspiring young chefs submitted wholesome and tasty recipes from 50 US states, 5 territories and Washington, DC.  Fifty-six winners were chosen to attend the festive event.

When kids decide to make healthier food choices, “cooking up” something that’s special in the kitchen and finding it delicious are a winning combination when it comes to spreading the word about healthy eating. Sam, a past winner who introduced the First Lady at the Dinner, learned at the age of 3 that eating healthy was like throwing a party for your belly.  Abby, a past winner, created Apples from Abby and delivered over 17,000 apples to students at her school.

cc3The menu included Alexandra’s Refreshing Watermelon Salad, Hannah’s Sweet and Savory Chicken and Peaches, Cauliflower Rice, Scarlet’s Southwest Barack-A-Bowl, Spinach Smoothie and more.

“For the last five years, kids across the country have cooked up nutritious and delicious dishes as part of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, and each year, I continue to be impressed by their talent and creativity,” said First Lady Michelle Obama.  “Kids are truly embracing and enjoying healthy eating and preparing healthy meals for their families, and I look forward to meeting this year’s winners here at the White House for the Kids’ “State Dinner” and trying some of their tasty creations.”

cc4Since its inception in 2015, a panel of judges have reviewed over 6,000 recipes and 270 guest have attended the Kids’ State Dinner.  For more information on the winning recipes, visit www.pbs.org/parents/lunchtimechallenge/cookbook
