Uptown Community Members Rally To Save Closing Supermarket

January 10, 2016
extralargeToday, uptown elected officials and community members will rally in an effort to save a desperately needed supermarket vital to the well-being of the neighborhood.

The Supermarket at 592 Fort Washington Ave on 187th Street has served the Hudson Heights community for over 30 years, providing quality affordable produce to the many residents in the area. This supermarket is now under intense pressure from the landlord to close its doors to make way for a Walgreens Pharmacy, leaving thousands, including many seniors and aging residents, burdened by far longer trips to distant grocery stores outside of the immediate neighborhood. This move has sparked fear of food insecurity for a community largely over the age of 65, set to be left without access to affordable food, as well as fears that another locally owned business, Hilltop Pharmacy, could be next to be forced out.
To push back against the efforts of the landlord at 592 Fort Washington, Citywide elected officials and local elected officials and leaders will stand with community members to express their support for Associated Supermarket and highlight the dire situation they and similar community-focused small businesses across the city face with rising rents and big box stores pushing into neighborhoods.
