Uptown Electeds Celebrate Opening Of GWB Bus Station

May 16, 2017

After years of delays and cost over runs during renovations, the GWB Bus Station finally opened its doors to the public this morning for travelers. Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez and Congressman Adriano Espaillat greeted morning commuters at the newly opened Station, before speaking on the benefits the terminal will bring to the Washington Heights community and the region.

After running two years over schedule and millions over budget, the elected officials, including NYS Senator Marisol Alcantara and NYS Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa, emphasized the need for the Port Authority and developers to place a focus on quality service at the bus terminal and a true responsiveness to the community.

The GWB Bus Station will likely have an official grand opening in the coming weeks, including many of the businesses slated to operate out of the terminal.

“With newly inaugurated bus service from Greyhound offering more routes, to greater access from New Jersey Cross-Hudson commuters capable of removing personal vehicles from the road, there is no doubt the renovated GWB Bus Terminal will be a net positive for our city and our region,” said Council Transportation Chair Ydanis Rodiguez. “Now that this station has reopened, the Port Authority and their developer partners need to make sure service is efficient and that community needs are addressed. This includes the opening of the A train entrance, adhering to agreements with small businesses and the opening of space for community use. We’re glad that we’ve finished the saga of this redevelopment and hope only to see a renewed commitment from the Port Authority to the Washington Heights community.”

“I am delighted to join in celebrating today’s opening of the George Washington Bridge Bus Station,” said Congressman Adriano Espaillat. “During infrastructure week, it is critical that we continue our efforts to invest in capital improvements throughout our city. Long overdue in its completion, the GWB provides an alternative method of transportation for commuters coming into New York City and will serve as a crucial economic engine and viable transportation link to and from Manhattan.”

“After two years of delay and millions of dollars of excess spending, I am pleased to know that the bus terminal portion of the George Washington Bridge Bus Terminal project is open to the public,” said NYS Senator Marisol Alcantara. “Considering the hardship to the community created by these delays, I hope to work with the Port Authority to address resident concerns and implement community space that was promised as part of the original project. New Yorkers deserve accountability in government, and I hope that the Port Authority and the broader state government will take the course of this project as a learning experience for future projects. In addition, I want to urge the developer and the Port to prioritize the swift completion of the retail portion of the project.”

“The long awaited George Washington Bridge Bus station has finally come to fruition after years of delay,” said Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa. “The now fully renovated station is accessible to riders with disabilities, has improved services and amenities, and also features a selection of retail shops including local. Our community deserve quality service for coming in and out of the State in a station that meets the demands of the riders in this era where quick technology-driven information is vital to travelers. Said Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa. “I am glad and excited for this major transportation investment and we will continue to push for the complete opening promoting small businesses and the hiring of local residents”.
