State Senator Marisol Alcántara (D-Manhattan) announced $50,000 in state funding for the Dominican Medical Association on Thursday. The Dominican Medical Association, founded 20 years ago, helps newly-arrived immigrant physicians receive training to pass United States medical board exams, allowing them to serve their communities. They also circulate public health education in their communities and help create partnerships between Dominican-American physicians and the existing local medical community.
“The Dominican Medical Association does deeply necessary work for the community I represent. Immigrant communities have both specific health needs and a need for culturally competent medical treatment. By helping immigrant doctors achieve their American dream to practice medicine in the United States, the Dominican Medical Association both alleviates the shortage of Spanish-speaking doctors in our community and provides opportunity for Dominican-American doctors to practice their vocation. I am proud to offer this funding and hope to partner with them in the future”, said State Senator Marisol Alcántara.
