November 28, 2017

State Senator Marisol Alcántara (D-Manhattan) announced $25,000 in state funding for Literacy, Inc. today at the Inwood Library. After meeting with students, educators, and constituents, she spoke on the importance of literacy and early childhood education.

“Early childhood education is key for the long-term educational outcomes of students” said Senator Marisol Alcántara, “As the representative of a relatively low-income district, I thought it was important that supplemental reading programs like LINC be made available to local children. This funding will pay for an expansion in the number of children they are able to serve. I am proud to announce this funding and hope to continue to partner with Literacy, Inc. in the future.”

“Literacy, Inc.(LINC) works to increase reading opportunities for children citywide, including the neighborhoods of Inwood, Washington Heights, and Marble Hill,” said LINC Executive Director Shari Levine, “We serve children and families from birth to age 8, starting with our “Read to Me Little Bee” program that guides parents and caregivers of infants and toddlers to our “Reading Buddies Programs” that pair early grade readers with older schoolmates. Our family engagement workshops and volunteer training provide enhanced support for these emerging readers, Senator Alcántara has proven to be a dedicated partner; we are grateful for both her financial support and her commitment to the children of her district.”
