Uptown’s Ydanis Rodriguez, Rep Adriano Espaillat, And Others Stand Behind Mother Facing Deportation

August 17, 2017

Amanda, a working mom of three U.S. citizen children, entered sanctuary on Thursday night to avoid deportation to her native Guatemala, a country her children have never known, and where she faced death threats before fleeing. Trump Administration ICE officers have pursued Amanda, leaving her to stay in Holyrood Church in Washington Heights with her children in a small room. Like any mother, Amanda wants to continue being there for her children, all US citizens, seeing them grow and eventually graduate from school and go to college, an opportunity she will lose if she is deported.

Now the Washington Heights community is set to rally behind her. Following a press conference to highlight her situation on Thursday night, community organizations such as the Community League of the Heights (CLOTH) and the Washington Heights Community Conservatory for the Fine Arts are stepping up alongside elected officials Council Member Ydanis Rodriguez, US Rep. , NYS Senator Marisol Alcantara and NYS Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa.

Tomorrow at 1:00pm, the community will bring at least a small comfort of home to the troubled family. CLOTH will bring bunkbeds for the children to sleep on, while members of the conservatory will provide classical music classes to the children already familiar with the instruments given their mother’s job stringing violins and cellos.

Following this, the elected officials will head south to 26 Federal Plaza to deliver a request to federal immigration officials to request a stay on Amanda’s deportation order, to reopen her case and give her a day in court.
