Walter’s World: Complexions Contemporary Ballet Returns to the Joyce

May 5, 2011

Complexions Contemporary Ballet returns to the Joyce Theater for eight performances beginning Tuesday May 24th through Sunday May 29th.

After a successful fall season the company returns to the Joyce with company favorites and a New York premiere. Co-artistic directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson will present works including Moon Over Jupiter set to a Sergei Rachmaninov score; the New York premiere of Testament, featuring Desmond Richardson; and Rise, performed to the music of U2.

Moon Over Jupiter made it’s New York premiere in the November Joyce 2010 season. The work was inspired by images of the winds of Jupiter. The lush, theatrical music combined with Rhoden’s dynamic movement vocabulary creates a work of “galactic imagery”. Moon Over Jupiter transports the audience to another world, exploring the relationships between the movement, the environment and the performers.

Rhoden has created over 60 ballets for Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Since co-founding the company in 1994 Rhoden’s works bears an unmistakable originality and a use of an individual/signature movement vocabulary. In addition it his commitment to Complexions Rhoden has also created works for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Arizona Ballet, the Aspen Santa Fe Ballet Company, the Dance Theater of Harlem, Dayton Contemporary Dance Company, the Joffrey Ballet and New York City Ballet.

Richardson is one of the standout performers of his generation. In many respects he has been Rhoden’s choreographic muse, and has set the standard and performance level for the company. His proficiency in many dance genres including classical, modern, and contemporary, has presented performance opportunities with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet Frankfurt, American Ballet Theater, Swedish Opera Ballet, The Washington Ballet, Teatro at La Scala, and the San Francisco Ballet. Richardson is the recipient of the 60th annual Capezio Dance Award. Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, President and Artistic Director of the North Carolina Dance Theater, will present the 2011 Capezio Dance Award and the accompanying $10,000 honorarium to Desmond Richardson at the Joyce Theater performance on May 24, 2011.
