Walter’s World: Frank Stewart’s Visual Music

If a picture speaks a thousand words then the photographic exhibition, Traveling Full Circle: Frank Stewart’s Visual Music is a cultural and historical jazz anthology. The exhibition is a collection of fifty-eight images from the present Jazz at Lincoln Center performances to a sweeping look of New Orleans, Cuba and Africa. The photographs eloquently illustrate the origins of the great American art form known as Jazz.

Stewart has been the senior staff photographer at Jazz at Lincoln Center since 1990; and has traveled the world with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He was collaborated with Jazz great Wynton Marsalis on Sweet Swing Blues on the Road (1994), Smokestack Lightning: The Adventures in the Heart of Barbeque Country (1996) and Sweet Breath of Life (2004) with text by Ntozake Shange. In 2004, Stewart published Romare Bearden: Photographs by Frank Stewart; and presently he is developing two books Cuba y Su Tumbao (based on Cuba) and The Clock of the Earth (based on Africa).

Traveling Full Circle: Frank Stewart’s Visual Music is a loving and poignant visual tribute to jazz music. The powerful images capture the majesty and international musical heritage, which are the roots of America’s greatest art form. The exhibition located in the Peter Jay Sharp Arcade in the Frederick P. Rose Hall and run from January 22 through May 21, 2011. Admission is free, and is open to the public Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 4pm and from 6pm to 11pm; and on Monday from 6pm to 11pm.,
