Walter’s World: Weekend Picks- Dance Around the Town

This weekend we have dance in all its glorious forms across the city. In Brooklyn and Manhattan there are dancers talking about the art form, Midtown has a children’s classic on display, PBS celebrates dance and music on television, and hip hop rules in “da boogie down Bronx”. Here are a few of the many arts events taking place around the city and in your neighborhood.

Steps Beyond continues its Artists Talk Series with a discussion inspired by the new book Through the Eyes of a Dancer by Wendy Perron. She is joined by former and present dancers Siobhan Burke, dance critic for The New York Times; noted choreographer Mark Dendy,  and Sascha Radetsky. These four dancer who write dance commentary and critique dance will discuss who their performance experiences influenced their writing. The discussion will take place at Steps on Broadway, 2121 Broadway, 4th floor at Friday, February 28, 8 PM, followed by a reception.

651 edited Live and Outspoken: Dianne McIntyre Interviewed by Sarita Allen has been rescheduled for Friday, February 28, 7pm at the Mark Morris Dance Center, 3 Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn. The evening will include a candid conversation about their careers and professional experiences and excerpts from McIntrye’s repertoire. This event is presented as part of the 651 ARTS 25th year celebration in association with Clark Center NYC. Tickets are $20 for tickets call (212)- 868- 4444. 

Jazz

Jazz And The Philharmonic will be shown on 
PBS TV, Friday, February 28, 9:00-10:30 p.m. The concert highlights two of the greatest musical art forms the world has ever seen, classical and jazz. With performances by artists such as Chick Corea, Bobby McFerrin, Terence Blanchard and Elizabeth Joy Roe, this special emphasizes the works of legendary past composers such as Bach and Mozart with these contemporary artists. Songs are performed with the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra from the University of Miami Frost School of Music and National YoungArts Foundation alumni, with the concert also featuring a performance by YoungArts alumnus, U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts, award winning choreographer and celebrated dancer with Complexions Contemporary Ballet Desmond Richardson.

Momma’s Hip Hop Kitchen: VOL 7- Celebrating Sisterhood! Takes place at Hostos Community College, Main Theater
, 450 Grand Concourse, Bronx New York on Saturday, 2pm. The annual, free, all-women hip-hop concert “Vol. 7: Celebrating Sisterhood” will focus on the use of hip-hop as a tool to honor the accomplishments of women and build awareness around women in the arts during Women’s History Month. Experience a music, dance, spoken word, hip-hop and arts showcase featuring: DJ Quiana Parks, Lah Tere, Rockafella, NeNe Ali, Colored Girls Hustle, Pelham Academy Eagles, Shake System and more!

New York Theatre Ballet presents Cinderella at Florence Gould Hall, 55 East 59th Street. Performances are Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2 at 11am, 1pm, and 3:30pm.  Tickets are $40 for adults and $35 for children and are available online at www.nytb.org, and Ticketmaster at (800) 982-2787, or in-person at the Florence Gould Hall box office.  For more information, contact the Florence Gould Hall box office at (212) 355-6160.

Cinderella’s Ball will follow the 3:30pm performance on March 2 in Gould Hall’s Tinker Auditorium.  Children will get the chance to waltz with their favorite Cinderella character, play games, win prizes, try to find Cinderella’s glass slipper and eat great desserts, with wine for the parents.  Children are encouraged to wear their favorite Cinderella and Prince Charming outfits.  Tickets for Cinderella’s Ball are $50 and are available at reservations@nytb.org or 212-679-0401 x5.
