As the weather may be warming up, but the arts scene is downright hot! We have a revue of Harlem’s heyday at the Apollo Theater, gospel diva’s uptown, a reggae musical in Times Square and a workshop on the Eastside. Here are a few of the many events happening around New York and in our community.
An all-new Apollo Club Harlem returns to the legendary Apollo Theater Thursday February 20 thru Sunday February 23. For this 90-minute, nightclub revue, hosted by choreographer and director Maurice Hines, the Apollo Theater is transformed into an elegant nightclub. Apollo Club Harlem celebrates the glorious musical legacy of the Apollo Theater with sultry crooners, spectacular dance acts, a swingin’ 16-piece big band and a chorus line of Red Hot Steppers.
Boardwalk Empire star Margot B. and Kevin Mahogany star in the high-energy, nostalgic revue including dazzling double threat The Wondertwins and the gravity-defying Manzari Brothers. The Artpond Foundation invites you to a workshop presentation of Loving Obama A Dream (Fatherless Sons) a play written by John Ransom Phillips and directed by Sidra Bell. The production will take place at ArtPond Studio Space, 313 E 58th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenues) on Friday, February 21 and Saturday, February 22, 8pm. The Great Divas of Gospel and All-Star Reading of The People of Clarendon County with S. Epatha Merkerson, Geoffrey Owens and Roscoe Orman will be presented on Saturday, February 22 at 7:30pm and Sunday, February 23 at 3:00pm at the New York Academy of Medicine, 103rd St. & Fifth Avenue. The cast will include S. Epatha Merkerson, Geoffrey Owens, Roscoe Orman, The People of Clarendon County. The production is a offered by Woodie King Jr’s National Black Touring Circuit’s 2014 Black History Month Play Festival and Voza Rivers/New Heritage Theatre Group. Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds at The New Victory Theater, 209 West 42nd Street, will finish its run on Sunday February 23. This fun children’s musical featuring the timeless music and lyrics of Bob Marley and based on the children’s book by his daughter Cedella, Bob Marley’s Three Little Birds shares the legendary reggae artist’s message of peace and love with a new generation of songbirds.
