Why Amazon Should Consider Harlem For Its Second Headquarters

October 18, 2017

Derived from an article by Geekwire regarding Amazon’s announcement last month that it will begin searching for a second headquarters in North America and we think Harlem is a great option!

Amazon will send political and civic leaders across the continent into a frenzied scramble to attract the fast-growing technology powerhouse.

But what community actually have a chance to land Amazon’s “second home?”

The company’s press release lays out a few details of what on their hit list: metro areas with more than one million people; a “business-friendly” environment; a strong technical workforce; and “communities that think big and creatively when considering locations and real estate options.”

Here’s is why Harlem would meet Amazon’s needs (okay, so 700 thousand is not “a metro areas with more than one million people” and some say, “New York is (too expensive, too big”), forget about it:

But, this community is re-inventing itself as an important technology hub, largely on the back of the pioneering work at Harlem Tech FundHarlem BiospaceSilicon Harlem and Columbia University. This cosmopolitan city on the sandwiched between two shores New Jersey and Brooklyn, Queens and more is producing some of the top technology talent. Harlem checks a lot of boxes, and just wait Harlem is really about to hit its economic development gold mine. And don’t forget that Amazon just bought a little grocery chain based in Austin for $13.7 billion. Perhaps Whole Foods could form the basis of “HQ2” — as Amazon is calling its second corporate campus. An under resourced community on a big-time rebound, Harlem would work hard to attract Amazon, perhaps dangling massive incentives (with limits) and attractive real estate options in front of the company (like using the West Harlem garbage depot at 135th Street along the West Harlem piers as the office space). Harlem can boast Columbia University, City College, Barnard University and Harlem’s cosmopolitan appeal, welcoming culture and central location could serve it well as a contender for Amazon’s second headquarters. A transportation hub, Harlem could be a relatively easy commute, which will likely be a key component in any decision made by the Bezos bunch. So, there you have it. Our picks for cities that Amazon will consider for its second headquarters.
