Within Our Gates Live Remix by DJ Spooky AKA Paul Miller

Directed by Oscar Micheaux, 79 Min., USAFeatured on the new PIONEERS OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN CINEMA DVD, Oscar Micheaux’s Within Our Gates is the earliest surviving feature film by an African-American director. This drama tells the story of Sylvia Landry who attempts to raise money for an elementary school to serve the black community. In this film, Micheaux’s staging of a lynching is startling in its bluntness and speaks to the director’s fearlessness and willingness to address taboo subject matter. Within Our Gates is a landmark achievement of independent film and one of the cornerstones of the forthcoming DVD/Blu-ray series Pioneers of African-American Cinema, from Kino Classics. The film will be released with a New musical score composed by Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky.Live Music: DJ Spooky AKA Paul Miller
