Women’s Caucus Thanks Harlem Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito And More

June 20, 2016

Melissa-Mark-Viverito-IOU_7934After hearing from nearly 100 nonprofit providers of services for women and children in need, the Women’s Caucus of the New York City Council successfully secured nearly $1 million for day-to-day programming and over $3 million for brick and mortar building renovations.
The Caucus prioritized programs that will help women and girls overcome difficult circumstances like domestic abuse and homelessness to achieve success. Several funded programs offer health education to at-risk populations, such as the Violence Intervention Program, Women in Need, and the Self-Help for Women with Breast or Ovarian Cancer (SHARE, Inc.). Other funded programs foster healing and empowerment through creative expression, including the Girl Be Heard Institute, the Lower Eastside Girls Club, and Comunilife. In addition, funding for Non-traditional Employment for Women (NEW) will help women access careers in skilled, unionized jobs in construction, utilities, and facilities maintenance, which often start at $17 an hour with benefits.

“This is a huge win for women in New York City,” said Women’s Caucus Co-Chairs Helen Rosenthal and Laurie Cumbo. “When women and girls in need have access to a support network, training, and tools, there is no limit to what they can accomplish. We want to thank Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Finance Chair Julissa Ferreras-Copeland, and the Administration for being great partners in funding projects that will help women and children thrive in our City.”
