East Harlem Preservation invites you to attend an in-studio panel discussion regarding ongoing efforts to remove the statue of Dr. J. Marion Sims from its Fifth Avenue location. The program will be recorded on Thursday, January 26th at MNN’s El Barrio Firehouse Community Media Center.
Panelists will include:
- Harriet A. Washington, author of “Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present” (2007)
- Lynn Roberts, PhD, Assistant Professor at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy
- Diane Collier, Chair of Community Board 11
- Viola Plummer, member of the December 12th Movement and co-founder of the Harriet Tubman-Fannie Lou Hamer Women’s Collective
… (Dr. Sims) experimented on enslaved Black women without anesthesia or informed consent …
In addition to examining the presumed accomplishments of Dr. Sims, who experimented on enslaved Black women without anesthesia or informed consent, they will discuss related topics such as historic preservation and the civil and reproductive rights of women of color. Click here to RSVP.
In 2007, East Harlem Preservation began a campaign calling for the removal of the statue in solidarity with community activist Viola Plummer and others who had called attention to Sim’s cruel experiments. They maintain that the statue’s presence does a huge disservice to the neighborhood’s majority Black and Latino residents – groups that have historically been subjected to medical experiments without permission or regard for their well being.
In September 2016, they joined with artists from the Laundromat Project to organize a speak-out in solidarity with the reproductive rights of women of color. The event was held in front of the Sims statue, where speakers and artists honored their ancestors and condemned the continued assault on Black and Latina female bodies.
In June 2016, Community Board 11 called for the removal of the statue, a decision which EHP wholeheartedly supported.
