Drawing from diverse sources, including European Impressionism, Romare Bearden’s collages, William Carter’s tranquil oil paintings, and the bold and colorful modernist paintings of Jacob Lawrence, Stringfellow has constructed his own distinctive artistic vocabulary.
Although Stringfellow presents a positive viewpoint toward history and community, evidence of the hardships that African Americans have encountered appears throughout his oeuvre. His compositions redress this long history of oppression by engaging with and defeating harmful stereotypes while simultaneously commemorating African American communities and individuals.
