harlem hosptial awrad with rngelThe Friends of Harlem Hospital honored Congressman Charles B. Rangel (D-NY) with the Memorial Award on Monday, August 11, 2014, at The Annual Golf and Tennis Outing fundraiser in White Plains, NY, for his commitment and support of the Harlem Hospital throughout his career as a lawyer, New York State Assemblyman and United States Congressman. Friends of Harlem Hospital also honored Gerald S. Migdol, President, Migdol Organization; Michael K. Williams, Actor; Dr. Lisa A. Ross, Director, Anesthesiology, Harlem Hospital Center; and former New York City Mayor David Dinkins in recognition of the advocacy and service of the Honorable Basil Paterson.

“It is truly an honor to receive this award from the Friends of Harlem Hospital,” Rangel said. “The Harlem Hospital has been a model health center for providing quality care at an affordable cost, which is something I have fought for throughout my career.”

Founded in 1887, Harlem Hospital Center is the largest hospital in Central Harlem and provides medical and support services not only to the residents of Central Harlem, but also to those of West Harlem, Washington Heights, and Inwood. A member of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, Harlem Hospital Center is Harlem’s largest employer and dedicates its service to medically underserved areas.

The Friends of Harlem Hospital Center, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, was established on the 100th Anniversary of Harlem Hospital Center to engage in and support activities that promote the work of the Hospital. The Friends of Harlem Hospital Center assists Hospital initiatives that are not funded by NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation. The organization holds the Golf and Tennis Outing to raise funds for various projects. This year, Friends of Harlem Hospital Center aims to use the funds to help the Harlem Hospital add two floors to its new pavilion for in-patient care.

“Before the Affordable Care Act, institutions such as Harlem Hospital Center took profits out of the equation to treat the sick. We are fortunate to have a medical center in the heart of our District that believes in focusing on caring for their fellow brothers and sisters, and the sick and the elderly, than on the profits,” Rangel continued “Thank you for the award but most of all, thank you to the Harlem Hospital for all the help you have given to our community and thank you to the Friends of Harlem Hospital for supporting those efforts”.
