A Concert In Celebration of the Kennedy Presidency in Harlem

On Sunday, November 24, the Foundation for the Revival of Classical Culture is presenting a very special “celebration/concert” at the historic Riverside Church.  Our purpose is to memorialize, on the 50th anniversary of his assassination, the immortal contribution of President John F. Kennedy. The role of culture in the Kennedy Presidency, including that of his wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, in the service of both domestic and international diplomacy and engagement, will be emphasized.

The event will feature a short film that allows the young President Kennedy to posthumously address a contemporary young audience which has largely forgotten, never known, or never really heard him.  Thus, President Kennedy may vicariously propose to them, from the vantage point of history, the extraordinary challenges he posed to those of us privileged enough to have been alive at that time.  His challenges were “outrageous”—and, as it turned out, fully within our capacity as a people and nation. Consider his most famous, most improbable challenge:

“We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade, and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills; because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win–and the others too.”

Every generation of Americans deserves to be provoked, excited, and challenged by their President, as Kennedy did in this speech given at Rice University in September of 1962.
