With the holiday season upon us, last week Macy’s Herald Square celebrated their new 8th floor Home Department with the walk through a dinner tour with Harlem’s own, master chef Marcus Samuelsson.

61marcus samuelsson bookI went to join the food crowd who were there for his in store appearance and a chance to meet him and get a signed copy of his book, Marcus Off Duty: The Recipes I Cook at Home.

A member of Macy’s culinary council of advisors, Marcus along with several other leading chefs; meet with fans and food lovers at in store appearances across the country.  They demonstrate and introduce cooking ideas and recipes to inspire cooking at home.

Before the event I had a chance to chat with Marcus about his book and what he had planned for his store visit.  (Audio)

It was now time to take the tour across the 8th floor, which took us from station to station to taste a different dish or drink.  There were samples for the audience to try such as the Glogg, Berbere Smoked Salmon, Drunken Rum Cake, and Braised Short Ribs.  Chef Marcus emphasized family history and cultural interest as ways to approach your cooking to come up with new things to cook at home.

The audience participation was enthusiastic to say the least.  They had questions and suggestions for the chef and for each other about the cooking process at every stop!  When the tour was over Marcus signed books for the waiting crowd. Stepping onto the stage you can see how happy they all were to meet him and share a few words while he signed their books.
