“From the day I got to London, I knew I had to speak for families who were less lucky than I was,” she says. For more than 15 years, Wek has been working with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees with a focus on education, women’s rights, and clean water in her native country. She plans to start her own foundation, Alek Wek Works. “Food, shelter, water—you can’t comprehend how simple things can mean so much,” she says. “My Christmas wish is for people to be more engaged and give so much more.”
