Mother Of Harlem Man Fatally Shot By NYPD, Feds Say No Case Against Cops

August 22, 2017

The NY Daily News reports that the mother of an emotionally disturbed man who was fatally shot by police said that federal prosecutors will not pursue a case against the officers who killed her son.

Hawa Ban, mother of Mohamed Bah, shared the outcome of her meeting Tuesday morning with Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Joon Kim.

Mohamed Bah died on Sept. 25, 2012. Hawa Bah said she had called 911 that day because the 28-year-old son was in the midst of a “mental health crisis.”

But NYPD Emergency Services Unit officers responded to his Harlem apartment instead, shooting and killing him.

Cops have alleged that Bah came at them with a knife. His family counters he was never a threat and that he was “wounded on the ground” when he was shot in the head.

A Manhattan grand jury in 2013 did not indict the officers involved, prompting Hawa Bah to urge the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office to launch an official investigation.

The family has filed a $70 million civil lawsuit against the city.

Hawa Bah and her lawyers stood with faith leaders and police reform activists before they walked into the Manhattan U.S. Attorney’s Office at St. Andrew’s Plaza at about 11 a.m.

As they walked into the building, supporters chanted, “Mohamed was our brother, and we are here to say: we’re standing with his mother and want justice today.”
