jcc-harlemJCC Manhattan is proud to announce that JCC Harlem, a new 6,000-square-foot community space on West 118th Street between Fredrick Douglass Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue, will officially open in January 2017. JCC Harlem is an initiative of JCC Manhattan, in collaboration with UJA-Federation of New York.

Reflecting a recent community scan of Central Harlem that showed a demand for Jewish experiences and hyper-local programming, JCC Harlem will feature a diverse menu of engagement options for individuals and families interested in Jewish community.

In ongoing efforts to learn about key assets in the neighborhood JCC Manhattan staff have been meeting with community officials and lay leaders, including Congressman Charles Rangel, the Police Athletic League, and Harlem School of the Arts. The JCC is also in early conversations with two neighborhood schools about extending its literacy volunteers program to support early elementary school children at risk of reading below grade level. In addition to working with local Harlem organizations, JCC Manhattan is engaging with fellow Jewish organizations to imagine the best ways to bring community to life in this new home. Among these organizations are Repair the World, PJ Library, Harlem Minyan, Lab/Shul, Beineinu, Romemu, and Israel American Council (IAC).

“As part of JCC Manhattan’s ongoing mission to shape 21st-century Jewish Life, we are thrilled to take our message and programming to the ever-evolving neighborhood of Harlem,” said Rabbi Joy Levitt, executive director of JCC Manhattan. “We do so mindful that the needs of this community are different than those of the Upper West Side, and pledge to work with local stakeholders to help build a community that reflects the needs, the hopes, and dreams of Harlem.”

Over the next few months JCC Harlem will be presenting and copresenting a series of “pop-up” events.
